Your "Happy Place" - Journey to Inner Peace & Joy

I am reminded me of our time living in Cairo, Egypt—a sprawling city of 17 million people where the constant chorus of blaring horns was a daily reality. To survive the sensory overload, weekends away from the city became sacred. We would escape the gridlock to seek out the quiet, green farming life of the Nile Delta, or sit by a small set of waterfalls tucked between two Nile-fed lakes. Sometimes, we would board a felucca and quietly glide past the tall reeds along the Nile River or drive to the Red Sea with its clear, warm waters.

Back then, those excursions were temporary lifeboats to escape the chaos of a large city. But in this unscripted chapter of retirement, I’ve realized something much deeper: we all need a sanctuary. We learned that true peace isn’t about constantly planning an escape from a crowded city or a demanding career; it is a state of mind you learn to cultivate right where you are, transforming your everyday routine into your ultimate happy place.

Your "Happy Place" - Journey to Inner Peace & Joy

Perhaps, you have defined "peace" as the absence of a crisis. You were often so busy managing the external environment that we neglected the internal one.

Now, in this rich and multi-faceted chapter of life, you have the autonomy to re-define peace. It is no longer just the absence of noise; it is the presence of joy. Your "Happy Place" isn’t necessarily a destination on a map; it is a state of being you cultivate.

1. The Architecture of Joy

Finding your happy place requires the same focus you applied to your career. It is about identifying the activities and environments where your "seasoned voice" feels most at home.

  • Quiet Mastery: For some, inner peace is found in the deep dive of research—losing track of time while tracing a family lineage or analyzing a complex market trend.

  • Operational Vitality: For others, joy is physical. It is the rhythmic glide of Nordic skis across a fresh trail or the hum of an e-bike climbing a ridge. When the body is in motion, the mind often finds its center.

2. Your "Happy Place"

It is a location where the external world provides inner peace and joy.

Examples of settings that offer a "Happy Place":

1. The "Intellectual Sanctuary"

For the researcher and the writer, the happy place is often a highly organized, quiet indoor space.

  • The Setting: A home office or library with monitors, a comfortable ergonomic chair, and the low hum of a computer.  There may be soothing music in the background.

  • The Joy: This is where the "Explorer’s Edge" comes alive. It’s the sanctuary where you solve the puzzle of a 19th-century ancestor, map out a new investment strategy, or draft a blog post that distills decades of wisdom. Peace here is found in order, clarity, and the pursuit of mastery.

2. The "Frontier"

For those who find peace through physical engagement with the world, the setting is expansive and rhythmic.

  • The Setting: A groomed Nordic ski trail through a silent forest or a winding mountain path leading to an alpine lake.

  • The Joy: In this setting, the world becomes a place of reflection that makes daily worries feel small. Peace here is found in the scale and beauty of nature.

3. "Surrounded by Family and Colleagues"

Sometimes the happy place is defined by the people within it, rather than the vistas outside.

  • The Setting: A large dining table or a backyard fire pit surrounded by children, grandchildren, and colleagues. Perhaps, a grandchild's performance or the dancing flames of a fireplace.

  • The Joy: This is the setting of the "Seasoned Voice." It is where stories are told, advice is sought (and given on your terms), and the "stewardship of wisdom" happens in real-time. Peace here is found in connection.

4. The "Workshop of Creation"

For many, inner peace is a byproduct of working with their hands to build something tangible.

  • The Setting: A garage, a woodshop, painting gallery, or even a digital "sandbox" where you are creating.

  • The Joy: There is a unique joy in "Creation"—the quiet focus required to fix, optimize, or build. Peace here is found in the satisfaction that comes with creation.

5. The "Quiet Vista"

This is the setting for the "Sunset" moments—purely to view and appreciate.

  • The Setting: A deck overlooking a valley, a window seat during a snowstorm, a dock at a lake, or a quiet bench in a public garden.

  • The Joy: Peace here is found in stillness and the "view".

6. "Sabbath Worship"

For some, the most profound "Happy Place" is not found in a hobby or a landscape, but in sacred Sabbath worship. This setting is a deliberate weekly realignment that, as a fellow traveler, moves you to profound peace and spiritual joy and shifts your focus toward gratitude.

Whether it is the hallowed chapel, the familiar comfort of pews, or even a quiet home space dedicated to prayer, this setting is designed to filter out the "noise" of the world and embrace the stewardship of the soul

Making it Personal:

As you reflect - you might find that your "Happy Place" isn't just one; but, a multi-faceted setting depending on the day.  It is the setting that most effectively provides "inner peace" and "joy".

True Joy is Rarely a Solo Venture:

True joy is rarely a solo venture. It is the joy that comes from sharing with others.  Whether it is through a conversation with a grandchild or a text or email to a loved one, seeing your experience create a spark in someone else is a profound source of fulfillment.

A Personal Reflection: Reclaiming Your Sanctuary

Throughout our working years, we are conditioned to constantly manage noise. We manage the demands of the office, the pressure of deadlines, and the endless ping of digital notifications. We learn to live in a state of perpetual response, moving from one challenge to the next.

When we transition into retirement, that external noise fades—but our internal engines can still find themselves revving at top speed, searching for a task to execute.

That is why the most critical step in claiming your true time sovereignty is identifying your "Sanctuary"—that specific, unhurried destination where the rest of the world is completely quiet.

For me, that happy place takes two distinct forms. It is either shifting into gear for an e-bike ride into the crisp air of the nearby mountains, watching the tree line give way to open summits and listening to small streams as they tumble into the valleys below.  Or, it is sitting in stillness, listening to quiet, uplifting music that restores my focus. In those moments, the demands of the past and the uncertainties of the future dissolve. There is only the trail, the melody, and the fresh air.

Defining Your Sanctuary

Your happy place is waiting for your arrival. What is the one activity that makes the rest of the world go quiet - a special corner of your home, an alpine or forest trail, or a workshop?
