Strengthening What Matters Most: Family

During our time in the Middle East, I would return to our Alaska home for a month's annual leave in the summer. This was an opportunity to step away from a complex network—ensuring emails were sent, deadlines were hit, and the professional grid never went down. But while I was busy keeping the corporate machinery running, I realized that my most important assignment wasn't a company "dash board", it was stepping toward the people who matter most, to strengthen the true foundations of my life.

______________

The Architecture of Connection: Strengthening What Matters Most

In the fast-paced rush of a career—navigating deadlines and the constant hum of productivity—it’s easy for the most important foundations to lose their focus. As our latest reflection reminds us: "During the course of life’s journey, family relationships can become strained."

Retirement isn't just a time to step away from the "office"; it’s a dedicated season to step toward the people who matter most.

Mending the Threads

Whether it’s distance, time, or the lingering stress of years spent in high-pressure roles, relationships require intentional maintenance. Strengthening these bonds is more than just a nice sentiment—it is "an important part of ensuring a healthy, happy, and productive life."

In this chapter of life, "productivity" looks different. It’s measured in:

  • Time Spent: Trading business trips for beach walks; boardroom meetings for family dinners; classrooms for family outings.

  • Active Listening: Truly hearing the hopes and challenges of your spouse, children and grandchildren.

  • Presence: Being physically and emotionally available to support your spouse and the next generation as they navigate their own journeys. This could involve attending grandchildren recitals, soccer and flag football games; hosting family picnics and dinners.

Building a Legacy of Love

As we transition from success to significance, we realize that our greatest legacy won't be found in a portfolio or a professional achievement. It will be found in the strength of our family ties.

The sunset of a career is the perfect light by which to see the beauty of these relationships. Let's use this time to heal, to connect, and to build a foundation that will support our families for generations to come.

Call to Action:

Whether it’s mending a strained relationship or deepening a healthy one, the best time to start is now.

Examples:

"I know I wasn't as present as I wanted to be during my career. I'd love to make this chapter different."

"Take a cooking class with a child, learn a new language with a spouse, or start a small gardening project with a grandchild. The shared struggle of learning creates a unique bond."

Set aside family dinners or video conference call to have each family share recent events in their life and to keep family connections strong.
